When I first started learning activated sludge, MLSS and MLVSS sounded almost identical.
And honestly, a lot of operators confuse them at first.
But once I understood the difference, process control started making much more sense.

What Is MLSS?
MLSS stands for:
👉 Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids
This measures:
- all suspended solids in the aeration basin
That includes:
- living microorganisms
- dead organisms
- organic solids
- inorganic material
In simple terms:
👉 MLSS tells you how many total solids are in the system.
What Is MLVSS?
MLVSS stands for:
👉 Mixed Liquor Volatile Suspended Solids
This measures:
- mostly organic volatile solids
Which usually means:
👉 the active biological material doing treatment.
This is the “living” portion operators care about most.
The Simplest Way to Think About It
I explain it like this:
- MLSS = everything in the mixed liquor
- MLVSS = the active biological portion
MLVSS is basically a subset of MLSS.
Why the Difference Matters
You can have:
- high MLSS
- but weak biology
If too much of your MLSS is:
- inert solids
- grit
- inorganic buildup
Then treatment efficiency can suffer.
That’s why MLVSS helps operators understand:
👉 how healthy the biology actually is.
Typical Ratios
In many activated sludge plants:
- MLVSS is often around 70–80% of MLSS
Example:
- MLSS = 3,000 mg/L
- MLVSS = 2,100 mg/L
That means:
👉 about 70% of the solids are active volatile solids.
When I Watch This Closely
I pay closer attention to MLSS vs MLVSS when:
- troubleshooting biology
- evaluating sludge age
- investigating poor settling
- dealing with industrial waste
Common Beginner Mistake
A lot of new operators focus only on MLSS.
But MLSS alone doesn’t tell the whole story.
You also want to know:
👉 how much of those solids are actually active microorganisms.

MLVSS helps tell you how much of that is useful biology.
Understanding both gives operators much better process control.
